Over the last sixteen years Ian has authored numerous books and articles both on Value Added Tax and the environmental taxes.  His first book, “VAT Basics” was published by Gee & Co in 1991 which was followed by a training video with the same title in the following year.

His latest book – A Walk down the Fairways of Golf - has just been published by Spiramus. Admittedly, VAT is probably the furthest thought from anyone’s mind as they look out from the clubhouse towards the first tee. But for anyone involved in the administration of golf clubs, and in particular with their finances, grappling with VAT has been a thorny issue ever since it was introduced. This book is intended as a guide to the basic rules of VAT as they affect golf clubs for club secretaries, treasurers, finance committee chairmen and accounting practices that have golf clubs as their clients. It highlights many of the most common problems likely to arise in the context of VAT, and offers some practical solutions, such as how to avoid an unexpected VAT bill on a refurbishment of the clubhouse. With this book as a reference, it will be easier to avoid the many VAT "bunkers" which can create unwelcome and costly traps for golf clubs.

His current project is an Environmental Tax Handbook for the same publisher.

Ian wrote the environmental taxes section of the loose leaf book “The Indirect Tax Guide” published by CCH and is currently correcting and updating a book on Local Taxes and Business Rates for the same publisher.

Between writing books, he has written numerous articles for “Indirect Tax News” – also published by CCH and for the Chartered Institute of Taxation.
